If you stop to analyze it, you could easily argue, as I am about to do, that Mitch McConnell and many of his GOP Congressional colleagues are more than happy to see Donnie lose. While Donnie is bleating that the election is being stolen and votes are being manufactured (or tossed — depending on which state he is worried about) McConnell and a notable number of major GOP figures are NOT rushing to his aid. Donnie’s legal team in all of this is a clown car of idiots, headed by Rudy Giuliani. They are winning virtually nothing in legal efforts to impact ongoing vote counts and again, are getting no help from major figures in their party.
Over the past four years, Trump HAS helped Mitch achieve his wet dream (heavily realized) of packing the federal courts with right wing Federalist Society zealots; ready to defend party gains and to throw a monkey wrench into any Democratic reform programs or efforts to do anything that gets in the way of their clear goal: Defending corporate America from everything from environmental & health regulations, worker rights, minimum wages, affordable health care or consumer or economic regulations.
However, most every other Trump action has been a massive pain in the posterior for Republicans and especially McConnell. They have had to stand mute in the face of his continual wild mood and policy swings and threats, lack of programs or policies, rampant corruption and fraud, and usurpation of power by incompetent family members. At the same time, they get excoriated by their opponents for their public weakness due to fear they might be attacked by Trump supporters.
Even with Biden in the White House, Mitch can still carry out his clear plans for obstruction, while raking in millions in contributions for the next campaign by making sure wealthy donors get the things they demand for their money.
He also gets at least another two years to stuff courts.
He knows the GOP has strengthened its control of redistricting at the state level to further implement gerrymandering and control of state politics.
Biden has been a Senator and knows the system. Mitch no doubt feels he can can work with him in areas he wants things....most likely a big infrastructure bill.
He knows any agreements he reaches in negotiations with Biden will face far less risk than having a Trump in place to continually change his mind every 10 minutes.
You have to give Mitch credit. He is ruthless as a politician and without ethics or morals, but his skills at politics and reading the tea leaves are a key reason the GOP continues to
survive and thrive even as its base steadily erodes.
The political climate in two years and in four is going to get tougher and tougher for the GOP, but with his control of the Senate, his increasing control of the judiciary, gerrymandering to help enhance the climate for Republicans even when their policies do not enjoy full public support, and
a steadfast commitment to stonewalling any attempts by the Democrats to get anything major done (and convince America Democrats are ineffective) Mitch and the GOP are in a very strong position to keep monkey wrenching our democracy even as his party steadily loses its constituency.
